Il viaggio di Goethe

Attratto ed eccitato dal “brutto mostro pericoloso“, come lo definiva il suo compagno di viaggio, il pittore tedesco Tischhein, convinse un giovane del posto a fargli da guida perchè “nell’intervallo di due eruzioni, doveva essere possibile raggiungere la sommità del cono, spingersi fino al cratere e ritornare”, pensò Goethe, che aveva studiato la cadenza regolare delle frequenti eruzioni del 1787.

Nel suo Viaggio a Napoli, J.W.Goethe, racconta che si spinse fin sopra al cratere del Vesuvio, con il suo pennacchio di fumo, rischiando la propria vita, per scoprire i segreti del vulcano.


“Ci trovammo a picco sull’orlo di un abisso enorme.
Improvvisamente echeggiò un boato e la scarica formidabile ci passò sopra la testa.
Ci curvammo involontariamente , come se questo ci potesse salvare dalla tempesta di massi, le pietre più piccole cominciavano già a crepitare quando noi, contenti di avere superato il pericolo, arrivammo ai piedi del cono, mentre la cenere fioccava ancora, coi capelli e con le spalle infarinate anzi che no.”
